Entry & Exit

Travelers who want to travel in Tibet must apply travel permit before arrival in Tibet. The travel permit should be used along with the passport.

Currency

The standard unit of Chinese currency is the Renminbi (RMB), also known as the Yuan. You must have enough cash while traveling in remote areas of Tibet. Since, no foreign exchange service available in all places. Always ask your guide where to exchange money.

Electricity

The electricity in Tibet is 220 volts, but the bathrooms of many luxury and medium grade hotel also have 110 volts sockets

Drinking Water

Only few luxury hotels provide drinkable tap water, so don't forget to ask the hotel whether the tap water is drinkable or not. Boiled water is available in all guestrooms, and bottled mineral water is on sale everywhere in cities. You must have your own water bottle while in long driving. You can ask hotel or guide for refill of boiled water. 

 

Postal Service

Postal service is available at the service desks of hotels and post offices. Note: to use standard envelopes, write the postal code, and be sure to use enough stamps.  EMS is also available in most post offices.

 

Credit Card, ATM and Travelers Cheques

All major credit cards including Master, Visa, American Express, JCB and Diners are accepted in Lhasa, Tibet . However, it is recommended to exchange local currency while you are in Lhasa . No foreign currency is accepted other small towns and remote area.

The Bank of China can cash traveler's checks sold by international banks and traveler's check companies in the United States, Canada, Australia, Japan, Hong Kong, UK, France, Switzerland, and Germany. The ATM also available in Lhasa and you can draw cash.  Bank hour is 9-12 a.m. and 15-18 pm. Avoid Saturday and Sundays to use ATM.

Telephone

Telephone with IDD, STD is available in major cities. Internet access also available in hotels and internet cafe in major cities.

Medical Services

Hotel that receive foreigners have clinics that provide medical, health, and massage services. These services are available cities like Lhasa , Shigatse, only. You can telephone the emergency centers in nearby hospitals or ask your guide to make arrangements for medical services.

Television

English and Japanese Television programs are available in many hotels via satellite relay. The China Central Television Station and some local TV stations also provide English news and other programs in English.
